Preventing Identity Theft
Utah State has a new website where you can report ID theft occurrences, and get some helpful tips to keep your information protected. It’s not very user-friendly, but it does have some good info:
Welcome to IRIS, the Utah Attorney General’s Office Identity theft Reporting Information System. Identity theft is now the fastest growing crime in the nation. However, it is a crime that is infrequently reported. About 33% of identity theft crimes are reported to law enforcement. Only by reporting identity theft crimes to law enforcement can we begin to impact this personally destructive crime.
Another good, national resource is the FTC. It’s always a good idea to check your credit report every year, and opt out of credit card offers, so they don’t continuously fill your mailbox.
